Writing "licence"¶
At CERN, there are two official languages: French and UK English. When writing
about open source, we often discuss licensing. Licence
as a noun is written
with a c
in UK English, and with an s
in US English (license
). As a verb
though, it is written with an s
in both US and UK English. So, using UK
English, we could write: I am going to license my hardware design using the
CERN Open Hardware Licence
.
We do respect the US English spelling of license
the noun when it is part of a
standard well-accepted expression, such as Contributor License Agreement (CLA)
or when quoting from third parties (e.g. the terms and conditions of GitHub).
